Bilingual Regional Workshop: Postpartum Mood Disorders

The Best Start Resource Centre presented a one-day bilingual workshop on Postpartum Mood Disorders, hosted by Denise Hébert, Family Health Specialist at Ottawa Public Health. The workshop provided evidence-based information and strategies on prevention, assessment and treatment of Postpartum Mood Disorders.

A collaborative project of FASD Stakeholders for Ontario, funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada, this series examined the root causes of women's alcohol use during pregnancy, including addiction and mental health problems, and provided ways to support women with significant alcohol problems or addictions in pregnancy.

Based on input from the "Have a ball!" Physical Activity Toolkit Training Needs Assessment, this interactive workshop was designed to assist early years service providers in strengthening physical activity programming for children from birth to age six.

Continuing Quality Improvement in Maternal & Child Health: A workshop for administrators, managers and educators: to support implementation of the “Baby Friendlytm Initiative” in hospital and community settings.

Sponsored by the Ontario Breastfeeding Committee, Best Start Resource Centre and St. Joseph's Healthcare Centre, this workshop was moderated by Marianne Brophy, B.Com. IBCLC, UNICEF/IBFAN BFI master trainer and master assessor, WHO/UNICEF Baby Friendly Network Coordinator for Industrialized Countries, Chair, BCC Baby-Friendly Assessment Committee.

The session shared management strategies for hospitals and communities, provided a panel discussion with other experts from all sectors of maternal/newborn and child health from both hospital and public health settings and participants received a tour of St. Joseph's Healthcare Baby Friendly Maternal/Newborn and Child Program.

This series of regional workshops were presented in partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and provided an overview of postpartum mood disorders, including information and strategies regarding prevention, assessment and treatment.

The Baby Friendly™ Initiative in Ontario
Hospital & Community

This one day workshop provided participants with background information on the health care costs of formula feeding versus the health care costs of breastfeeding. Participants learned what the global criteria for becoming “Baby Friendly” are and discussed successful strategies, as well as challenges, they face. This session included the Baby Friendly™ Community Health Services (The Seven Points) and the Baby Friendly™ Hospitals (The Ten Steps). A BFI assessor co-facilitated every workshop.

Supporting Change: Preventing and Addressing Alcohol Use in Pregnancy
LEVEL 2 WORKSHOP FOR FAMILY PHYSICIANS

This level 2 workshop was for family physicians who have already taken the Supporting Change training, or who have an advanced knowledge of alcohol use in pregnancy. An agenda was developed based on the needs and interests of the participants, and included advanced information about alcohol use in pregnancy and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
