Pre – Conference Day-Session 1 - Why am I still hungry?
We know that social and economic environments have a huge influence on maternal and child health, but how much do we understand about the roots of child poverty in Ontario - and what can be done? In this pre-conference session, participants built their understanding of the programs and strategies that reduce poverty and improve health equity.

Armine Yalnizyan, Senior Economist with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives provided thought-provoking research and analysis to support participant’s capacity to work with the complexities surrounding child poverty. The day also broadened participants understanding of health inequities - differences in population health that are connected to unequal economic and social conditions - and will include a discussion of the racialization of poverty in Ontario.
In the afternoon, we welcomed Dianne Bascombe and Ronni Gorman from Pathways to Education Canada, Ginette Cyr from the Sudbury and District Health Unit, Tom Cooper from the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction and Angela Mashford-Pringle from the University of Toronto. They shared their communities’ success stories and provided insights and learnings that participants could apply in their own day to day work.
