The Honourable Landon Pearson delivering the Keynote Address at
the Best Start Annual Conference 2007.

Conference Overview

The Best Start Resource Centre (BSRC) supports service providers in Ontario who work on health promotion initiatives to improve the health of expectant parents and their young children. Best Start undertakes activities in consultation, resource development, information gathering and dissemination and training, including holding an annual conference.

Once again, the Best Start Annual Conference promises to be informative, practical and responsive to the training and information needs of health promoters.

Among the highlights of the Conference will be the launch of the Best Start Resource Centre Postpartum Mood Disorder Campaign, a province-wide effort to raise issues, share resources and promote early and effective intervention strategies for families with a new baby who are living with postpartum mood disorders.

Conference sessions address the range of issues on the preconception – prenatal – child health continuum including:

Addressing particular needs of specific populations, including Aboriginal communities, transnational families, teens and others.

Meeting the varied needs of service providers, including front-line practitioners, policy-makers, researchers and advocates in community-based associations, child and family service organizations, hospital and other health care settings.

Postpartum Mood Disorders (PPMD)

Many women will experience postpartum mood disorders (PPMD) after the birth of a baby. In March, 2007, the Best Start Resource Centre will launch a province wide campaign about PPMD.

The campaign will raise awareness, clarify misconceptions about what PPMD is, and encourage women experiencing PPMD to seek help. There are three areas of focus to the campaign:

Provincial Media – comprehensive media kits will be sent to Ontario newspapers, radio and TV stations, and information will appear on transit and in malls.
Health Care Providers – evidence based information and resources will be shared with family physicians, nurse practitioners, midwives and obstetricians.
Local Activities – communities will be invited to participate in the campaign with Best Start providing information, ideas and resources.

Service providers describe Best Start staff and services as “credible”, “proactive” and “relevant”. In a recent evaluation, over 80% of those surveyed believed that BSRC services increased their capacity to initiate or support local health promotion programs and projects. In 2005, the BSRC held consultations with over 150 clients; produced 9 new resources, distributed almost 400,000 copies of existing resources and delivered 15 regional workshops.
